Suffering and resistance: The portrayal of violence and trauma at Jewish museums

“To write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric,” Theodor W. Adorno wrote in 1949. Many thinkers agreed with his sentiment; and the topic of the impossibility and limits of depicting the Shoah has been hotly debated ever since. More than 80 years after the end of the Second World War, different Jewish museums still wrestle with this challenge. Is there – should there be – a certain moral responsibility in this regard? How does one depict violence without glorifying it?

In tonight’s lecture, Professor Yaniv Feller (Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation) develops a comparative perspective that casts these questions in a new light.
